How do You Maintain and Clean R6 Ducting?

To maintain and clean R6 ducting, follow these steps:

1. Prepare Your Space:

   – Begin by turning off your HVAC system to prevent dust from being blown around during the cleaning process.

   – Lay out a dry, clean towel in your kitchen and prepare your sink with soapy water for washing the vent covers.

2. Remove and Wash the Vent Covers:

   – Use a stepladder and screwdriver to remove wall or ceiling vents, while floor vents can usually be picked up directly.

   – Clean the vent covers using liquid dish detergent and a soft toothbrush to reach into the nooks and crannies. Rinse and set them on the towel to dry.

3. (Carefully!) Clean Your Air Ducts:

   – Gently use a flexible vent brush to dislodge dust and dirt from the sides of the exposed ducts. Be cautious not to damage the flexible ductwork during this step.

   – After brushing, use the flexible hose of a shop vacuum with a soft attachment like a dust brush to vacuum out the loosened debris. Ensure the attachment is securely attached to the vacuum.

   – Given the limitations of your tools, you might not reach as far into the ducts as a professional cleaner would.

4. Wipe Away Remaining Debris:

   – Using a damp microfiber cloth, wipe down the accessible parts of the duct interior to clear any remaining dust and debris. Be careful not to saturate the ducts with water, which can damage the insulation.

5. Replace Your Air Filter and Put the Vent Covers Back:

   – Once the vent covers are dry and the accessible parts of your ductwork are cleaned, reinstall the vent covers using a stepladder and screwdriver if necessary.

   – Wipe up any dust or dirt that fell around the vents or below to keep the area clean.

   – Consider replacing your air filter at this time, as it will help maintain the cleanliness of your ducts for longer.
